Trooper Injured During Shooting in North Phoenix
--Update: Friday, May 26, 2023--
On May 25, 2023, around 12:40 p.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) state trooper was conducting an investigation in the area of 19th Avenue, just north of State Route 101, when he was fired upon and returned fire with a suspect, later identified as Howard Lamar Johnson. Johnson was later apprehended by the Phoenix Police Department at an apartment complex in Glendale.
Colonel Jeffrey Glover, Director of AZDPS, stated the trooper was shot several times during the altercation but is in good spirits and is expected to recover fully.
“Having spoken with the trooper and his family, I am optimistic he will be back on the road in due time, protecting the citizens of Arizona with his brave and selfless service,” said Colonel Glover.

On Thursday, May 25, 2023, an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was injured during a shooting in north Phoenix. The trooper was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.
The Phoenix Police Department is conducting the criminal investigation.
