While trace evidence analysis encompasses a number of different types of comparisons of small amounts (trace) evidence to known standards, the Scientific Analysis Bureau currently provides trace analysis in ignitable liquids and bulk explosives.
Residue from an arson scene can be analyzed to potentially determine the nature of the ignitable liquid used to set the fire. Similarly, analysts in this area can perform elemental analysis on explosives in an effort to determine the chemical makeup of the explosive device.
The Scientific Analysis Bureau offers trace evidence analysis at its Central laboratory in Phoenix.
